World War I begins in Europe.
July 28, 1914
Austria-Hungary declares was on Serbia, after the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand in Sarajevo. After initially resisting involvement, President Woodrow Wilsons signs the joint Congressional resolution declaring war on Germany on April 6, 1917, then a similar resolution against Austria-Hungary on December 7, 1914. Some 112,000 Americans are killed in the war, more than half from disease. Fighting ceases in 1918, and the war officially ends in 1919.*
